Happy New Year

May we wish all our readers a a prosperous new year with lots of excellent opportunities for skiing . The early snow fall has done much to make us look forward with anticipation to great days on the slopes with Intersport Brnik whose instructors teach and entertain us so well. Skiing in Kranjska Gora just wouldn’t be the same without them and each year I look forward to the lessons more and more! For me, visiting will be made even easier by using the Bled shuttle from Ljubljana airport. Few people realise that, as well as running from the airport to Bled, the Shuttle also runs up to Kranjska Gora delivering you to your doorstep at a money saving fee of around 28 euros per person.

We have experienced a small but steady flow of people interested in family houses and small cottages, mostly from non UK buyers. Many are buying for their future enjoyment but we also have more commercial buyers who are looking at the long term investment of hotels. there is definitely a greater sense of realism in the market although some sellers are still trying to get unbrealistic prices based on those of 3 or 4 years ago. We advise buyers to consider Slovenia to be part of the mature european market. House prices are more likely to follow the pattern pertaining in Germany and Austria where prices tend to rise in line with general inflation rather than the more febrile conditions that we are used ot in the UK.

As some of you may be driving for the first time in Slovenia, we have included some driving hints on the How to Get to Slovenia page and I have enclosed an extract below. At this time of year, it is really important to check that roads are open before travelling and not to expect to be able to drive over the Vrsic pass.

  • Although there are good, modern roads in Slovenia, equivalent to UK motorways, linking many of the major towns, other roads can be slow and narrow. Roads crossing mountain ranges involve multiple hairpin bends and can reduce average speeds to around 25 mph.

  • Slovenia is acting strongly to reduce bad driving, accidents and casualties. Police have the authority to stop offending motorists and apply on the spot fines which can be extremely high - hundreds of euros in many cases. Be particularly wary of speed limits. The speed limit in most towns and villages is 50 kph. This will often not be marked and will apply when you drive past the sign marking the name of the town or village. Similarly, there is rarely a sign to show the end of a speed limit. This normally coincides with the sign marking the point at which you leave the village. Elsewhere, standard speed limits are 90 kph for rural, single track roads, 100 kph for normal roads and 130 kph for motorways. Tail-gating is not uncommon, but the police are clamping down on this. Be careful on blind bends where you may find overtaking cars coming in the opposite direction or drivers cutting across the bend.

  • The number of road deaths per 100,000 of the population is roughly twice that in the UK. You must drive with dipped headlamps during the day. Always carry your driving licence, insurance and a separate means of identification (normally a passport) with you when driving. In addition you must carry a warning triangle, safety reflective coat and first aid kit. In winter you must have winter tyres fitted (hire cars will have these fitted as standard).

  • If you drive on the motorways or the Ljubljana ring road, you will need to purchase a Vignette. These are valid for differing periods and may be purchased from petrol stations and post offices. They are relatively expensive considering the short amount of motorways in Slovenia, and in 2011 they cost 15 euros for one week, 30 euros for one month and 95 euros for one year. Driving on motorways without a vignette can result in a fine of up to 800 euros.

No one knows what lies ahead financially or how long the current crisis will last but when things are difficult it does feel good to be owner of something tangible which can be help for future generations. despite a recent rally, the pound has been sliding gradually against the euro over the past 2 or 3 with some people talking about its reaching parity. If you are concerned about this then please do contact us and we can put you in touch with money exchange agents who will tell you about forward contracts or transferring larger amount of money so that the running costs and personal spending money will at least be a measurable amount. This usually comes at a rate considerably cheaper than those offered by the larger banks. Higher interest bearing accounts for longer terms in Slovenia might also be something else which you might consider. Again we can advis you about these as part of our Gold Service.

May we wish you all a happy, successful and more prosperous New Year.

Frances
